Presentation Title: Research development of positive electrode materials with Nb ions for Li-ion batteries



Abstract:

The demand for electric vehicles equipped with Li-ion batteries is growing to develop low carbon society.  Ni-enriched layered materials are used as electrode materials of Li-ion batteries for electric vehicle applications.  However, available reversible capacity of Ni-enriched layered materials is approaching its theoretical limit.  Therefore, innovation and development of new positive electrode materials are necessary.  Recently, many high-capacity positive electrode materials with Nb ions have been proposed as a new series of electrode materials.1-4)  These materials crystallize into a cation-disordered rocksalt-type structure, and structural disordering triggers unique electrode properties associated with different local environments for cations.5-7) From these results, we discuss the advantage and uniqueness of cation-disordered rocksalt materials with Nb ions for advanced Li-ion battery applications.



Bio:

Naoaki Yabuuchi is a professor at Yokohama National University.  He completed his PhD at Osaka City University in 2006 and his postdoc at MIT, with research expertise in the development of new electrode materials and study on reaction mechanisms for high energy Li/Na batteries.  He has over 130 publications in these areas.  He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and an associated editor of Energy Storage Materials. He is the recipient of First International Award, “Science Award Electrochemistry” by Volkswagen and BASF, The 2nd ISSI Young Scientist Award, and ISE Prize for Applied Electrochemistry, The Periodic Table of Younger Chemists (Niobium) from The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) among other honors.
